Let's face it, e-mail not only asks, but demands a ton of our time. It is a constant race to stay up to date with the countless e-mails that flood our inbox's hourly. Many have just accepted this fact and shrug off the dozens of e-mails a day like it's nothing. Others, like myself, get very frustrated with the time I have to spend reading e-mails. It seems everything is sent through an e-mail at U of M, so therefore reading them is critical. One missed e-mail could mean missing out on something very important so I find myself reading them all for "that just in case" voice in the back of my head.
I do think we spend too much time on e-mail, though I do realize the importance of it. Without e-mail, we'd be way out of the loop here at U of M. That's why if I lost it for one day I think I'd be lost as well. Sure it's annoying to have my phone going off every five seconds with a new message, but without it I wouldn't know when a paper is due or when a class got cancelled or when the next blood battle is taking place. For all the pain it brings me it also brings too much good to give up. E-mail is a way of life now. We just have to accept the downfalls of it too.
Very true! When I wrote a blog entry, I really only skimmed the fact that email is important at U of M. Most of my emails come from the University or from classes so it is integral part of communication. Without email, students would miss very important information.
ReplyDeleteI find that e-mail takes up far too much time of our day to day lives as well. I try not to get frustrated at the constant influx of mail, but sometimes it can be hard. It can be especially hard to spend hours reading through junk mail that is just spammed daily.
ReplyDeleteI just checked one of my e-mail accounts that I hadn't used since back in high school. There were 654 e-mails in my inbox, and only 1 of them was worth me reading. With so much junk mail being sent out, I agree that it can be frustrating and even irritating at times.
It is definitely an annoyance to have to check my email so often and since I don't have a phone that supports email notifications, I couldn't imagine having them arrive and disturb me randomly throughout the day.
ReplyDeleteAs for Christopher's comment, I really agree with your bit about the massive amount of Spam that everyone gets. I'm pretty happy with Gmail though; it filters about %99.99 of spam for me and keeps my inbox clean and uncluttered. I no longer get those emails about some prince from Nigeria that wants to give me $400,000.
