In the 21st century, various technologies have enabled us to perform at the highest and the most advanced levels. Through the invention of Skype, one can instantly connect by video chatting with another person across the globe. This can especially be useful in our education, in classes such as on International Relations or classes that involve any kind of communication. The convenience and the great usability of Skype make it one of the greatest ideas in the 21st century.
Even the greats have downsides. While Skype may be a new revolutionary item in our lives, it is limited in many ways. If one wanted to practice public speaking, this would not be possible because only 1on1 conversation is available. Also, for purposes of international communication, often times languages are not in synch; therefore, one may not understand another’s language. Skype is required to use internet connection, and this may be a severe drawback because sometimes, if the internet connection is not there, Skype will not be able to function. Despite these drawbacks, Skype’s ability to connect people across the globe will forever be one of the most lasting inventions for us today.

B.J. I completely agree with you. I made this same exact argument in the previous post, and all our points line up...interesting. Yes, Skype is a great tool and can be used to benefit millions of peoples, but everything has some sort of flaw. You illustrate these flaws sufficiently in your post. Lets hope that one day Skype will be a universal benefit.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with the fact that one of the major limitations of Skype is that it depends on the Internet connection of both parties. Oftentimes I have been having conversations on Skype and it gets cut off continually. I also agree that the language limitation of Skype is a concern. The program is very biased towards English (and other European languages). This limits the number of people that con intercommunicate across cultures (for business and other things). I believe that Skype would be the most successful when it would be easily accessible to everyone, and for this to happen, they must overcome these limitations.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that the limitations of skype possibly make it hard to use in the classroom, but its possible benefits of being a global communication medium far outweighs the limitations in my opinion. These days, the internet is available almost everywhere, and thus allowing possible communication from almost every location, allowing for meetings or business to be conducted. Good point BJ!
