The Pro and Cons of Social Networking

Norah Wei Tang and Elizabeth Anne Wood both wrote articles regarding the use of social networking sites in a college environment. Norah believes social networking is harming those students who use it in college. She claims that the sites lead to poor time management and can hurt a students performance in academics and also cause them to not have a real social life off the computer. Elizabeth argues that social networking sites offer students a place to come together and share information. It allows for easy calibration on school work and people can play an intellectual role in each others lives.
While their opinions differ greatly, both Norah and Elizabeth agree that time management is an issue that needs to be dealt with. Students who spend too much time on these sites can be seriously affected in their work and life. While Norah makes it seem more extreme, both authors claim there needs to be a point where too much is too much. Elizabeth call this "effective use" and claims it must be learned. They also agree that the sites do offer instant access to information, which can help students.

  1. I agree that time management is a key problem with social networking sites. In schools, students are often taught how to use such features, but they are left to themselves to determine how much time is appropriate and effective to spend on each. I think that both networking with friends and with other academics is important through these sites and in life. However, students need to learn to incorporate both sufficiently so as to become a more well rounded person. They must not be sucked too deeply into the depths of information that instant social networking sites can provide.

  2. I believe that the true answer to whether these social networking are evil or not, can only be answered by each individual user. If you can balance your time and manage your hours on the site, it can be a very fun way to communicate with friends. Unfortunately, this balance has not been struck by most of the individuals I know. For students to be on Facebook during a lecture seems epitomizes this view. Hopefully students, myself included, can strike the proper balance in the future.

  3. I agree with you. Managing time is a seriously problem in college. I can even relate myself to these problems. WHen one spend too much time on these sites, one will eventually lose time not only to do work, but also damange health from radiation such as eye visions. Additionally, I always see students using facebook during lecture classes and don't even bother paying attention to professors. They must use time wisely and balance things out.
