Email plays an important role in today’s society, especially in the lives of students. School officials, Professors, GSIs, and students all rely heavily on the use of email. The members of this society are constantly communicating and transferring information to and from one another. Email is beneficial because it is highly efficient. To contact a large number of people, it is much more logical and more efficient to send a single document to many others in a click of one button rather than contacting each individual separately.
In a situation where a high official of any organization may need to contact all of the members with important information, the quickest way possible would be through the email. For example, I am currently a freshman representative in the KSA (Korean Student Association) club. When board-members have meetings, schedules often change and new events always come up all of sudden. When that happens, my job is to update every freshman with the adjustments made to the old schedule. Because of email, I can send out the information at once whereas if I didn’t have any access through email, I would have to call multiple times to each individual, which would be very time consuming. Overall, email is a very essential form of communication.
I would agree with BJ's perception of email, for as there is a need to contact a multitude of people, e-mail facilitates the process by making it easy for mass sending of messages. Yet even though email plays such an important role in society I believe that there are still drawbacks to be seen with the extensive use of having mail entirely sent through the internet. While sending emails does save paper, there is the overall need for the physical form of official documents. Also, I think that there is the danger of an extensive use of email, which would cause an individual to waste their time. Ultimately, this would make them less productive and rather than being more efficient in the workplace, workers would have a minimized commitment to their work when always using their email.
ReplyDeleteBJ, just to add to your point, another way to get in touch with the freshman of the KSA would be via text message. Sending mass texts is often difficult and time consuming. Once again we see that e-mail is the most effective way of quick, mass communication.
ReplyDeleteJason, I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with you. However much time one spends on e-mail (wasteful or not) it is still more effective than physical mail. In today's society it is all about instant communication, however impersonal it might be.
